Essential Oils - How to?

When applying the oils to your skin (this is called topically), be sure to do a patch test before using (apply a small amount of *diluted essential oil to a small area on the back of your hand or forearm and wait for 24 hours) to make sure you’re not allergic. This is considered a patch test. *diluted essential oil is essential oil mixed with a gentle oil that is safe for direct application (know as a carrier oil) such as, Almond, Jojoba, Olive, Avocado etc. This is usually mixed in many commercial products to a ratio equivalent to 1 or 2% essential oil for 99 or 98% carrier oil respectively. You can see here, that very little essential oil is needed as it is a very concentrated kind of oil. Essential oils are either inhaled or used diluted on the skin. Don’t use them on sensitive areas of the body especially around your eyes. It’s not considered safe to ingest them. Massage and direct application (topically) If you are treating skin conditions, essential oils are likely to work best topically. Usually only using a few small drops of essential oil, remembering to first dilute the oils with a carrier oil such as almond or olive oil. Use a few drops per tablespoon of carrier oil for best results, then massage into your skin until fully absorbed. If you feel some irritation, you may want to apply more carrier oil to the area to weaken the effects of the essential oil. If the irritation continues, stop using and wash area well with plenty of water. It's probably best to consult a dermatologist if you have any worries at all.

Diffuser Diffusers are definitely a popular medium when using essential oils nowadays. They are primarily a tool to help disperse essential oils in a room so that you can breathe in the steam (aromatherapy). Inhaling the essential oils can be relaxing (or have other effects on your mood depending on the oil used).

Bath Bathing in essential oils can also work well for a variety of skin conditions, especially if you’re trying to treat hard-to-reach areas like your back. Commonly up to 6 drops of oil are added to a running bath. Some oils may cause irritation! Especially oils like Oregano that are very strong when they contact the skin.

Be aware! Topical uses of essential oils may lead to rashes and irritation if you don’t dilute them beforehand with a carrier oil, event then some irritation may occur. Before using the oils, do a spot check, and wait 24 hours to check for an allergic reaction. Don’t take essential oils by mouth. Ask a doctor before using essential oils if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. Also those with underlying health conditions may want to consult a professional before using essential oils.
